8 Years of Modi Government: 8 Major Decisions


The ex Prime Minister Narendra Modi took over in May 2014, the governing body of the ex Prime Minister has captured many impactful decisions in eight years which have affected India in political, economic, and social sphere. Under the Modi administration, critical steps have been taken regarding economic reforms to bold foreign policy decisions with a view to changing the country. These are eight big callouts that have defined the eight years of Modi government:,

1. Demonetization (2016):

 On November 8, 2016, the Modi government made a historic move by demonetizing the ₹500 and 1,000 currency notes. The decision aimed to combat black money, counterfeit currency, and corruption. While it sparked mixed reactions and created temporary disruption, the government stated it was necessary to bring more transparency and formalization to the economy.

2. Goods and Services Tax (GST)

Implementation (2017):5G+GST replaced an unwieldy system of indirect taxes with a single system of taxation. This reform streamlined the payment of tax, made it transparent, and allowed trade across inter-state lines. It was one of the greatest economic reforms in Indian history but had challenge in implementation.

3. Abrogation of Article 370 (2019):

The government revoked Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir that had special status in August 2019. This decision was made to fully incorporate the region with the other parts of India to develop and have a uniformity in laws. The move was seen both negatively and positively in the entire world.

4. Triple Talaq Ban (2019):

The Modi government enacted the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act 2019 and outlawed the practice of triple talaq at once. This was considered a big move towards the guarantee of gender justice to empowerment of Muslim women.

5. Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat.

(Self-Reliant India):The government started the Make in India campaign to promote manufacturing and draw investments from foreign lands. Later, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign focused on self reliance in different areas, which advocated for local production and innovations.

6. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission):

Introduced in 2014, this mass scale nationwide campaign was to address sanitation and open defecation. It became a mass movement and allegedly resulted in the construction of over 100 million toilets in India; thus, it changed people’s habits and markedly improved people’s hygiene and health.

7. PM-KISAN Scheme (2019):

The government under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme gives direct income support to farmers. Every suitable farmer receives ₹6,000 custodially thrice a year. This was undertaken to ensure the welfare of small and marginal farmers throughout the nation.


8. Digital India Initiative:

The quest has as one of its objectives, to enhance online infrastructure and expand internet prevalence. It encouraged digital transaction, e-governance and digital literacy, particularly in rural areas, this helped in bridging the digital divide.


In these eight years of the rule of Modi government, many aberrational policies have been seen. Although every decision was accompanied by its own supporters and dissenters, it can’t be denied that they influence the formation of the new story of India.
